Kandal province is a border of Phnom Penh but people and children are living in remote areas are living under poverty line.

Kandal encircles Phnom Penh city. It borders Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Cham to the North, Prey Veng to the East, Vietnam, and Takeo to the South and Kampong Speu to the West. The area of the province is 3555 square kilometers (MAFF www.maff.gov.kh). The topography of the province is mostly the floodplains of the Mekong-Tonle Bassac river system. Kandal is the upstream beginning of the Mekong Delta which continues down-river into Vietnam. To the west are areas of lowland paddy fields. Kandal is classified as a rural province.

In 2004 the estimated population was 1.2 million persons and was 52% female. The population of children aged under 5 years was 136 thousand which was 11% of the total province population (NIS 2004). The Dependency Ratio (numbers of persons <15 years and 65 or over years per 100 adults aged 15-64 years) was 72.

The total number of households in 2004 was 236 thousand, giving an average household size of 5.2 persons (MAFF 2004). The people of Kandal live in 11 districts composed of 147 communes and 1087 villages (CDB 2004).

The population density of the province is 344 persons/km2 compared to an average population density for Cambodia of 75 persons/km2.
